Bryn Mawr, a town rich in history, is located nine miles west of Philadelphia on the Main Line.  It is known for it's tree-lined streets which include some of the areas most beautiful homes,  it's schools (both public and private), and it's town, enjoyed for both shopping and restaurants.

The first settlers of the area were the Lenni Lenape Indians.  Over time the area became settled by those who emigrated here from England.  The true foundation for the settlement of Bryn Mawr began with the construction of "Bryn Mawr" by Rowland Ellis and the formation of the "Harriton" estate

In the 1600s, the town was named for it's most influential family. Rather than "Bryn Mawr" the area was originally called Humpheysville.   The Humpreys built their home where Bryn Mawr College and the pretigious girl's school, the Baldwin School now reside.  The name lasted until 1860 when the Pennsylvania Railroad turned the town into a summer resort, changing the name of the town to Bryn Mawr.

Lancaster Avenue is the main thoroughfare through Bryn Mawr.  When built in 1741, Lancaster Road was thought to be the best built road in the country.  It was so well thought of, the Pennsylvania Railroad laid it's tracks directly parallel and called this section of the track, "The Main Line."  The train crews had no special uniforms, and were recognized by their high silk black hats.

Bryn Mawr today continues to be a highly sought-after place to live.  Bryn Mawr College, The Baldwin School for Girls and the Shipley School (co-ed) are examples of Bryn Mawr's pride in education.  And it should be noted that the public schools are as well thought of and as impressive as the private schools with new high schools and impressive admissions to all the top universities and colleges.
